Audience Task 3

The Hypodermic Syringe effect is a theory in that films and other media will directly effect the audience watching.  For example, if the film is a violent action film the the audience will want to do something violent. This theory led to the films "A clockwork orange" and "Mikey" being banned in fear that the violence in the films would be re-enacted by though who watched it. However some people believe that this is just a theory and that it does no account for peoples individuality. However most TV advertising works in this way. They will show the product being used in hope that it will influence the watcher into doing the same, and buying the product. I think that the Hypodermic Syringe theory could work, however, I do think that human nature and instinct could and do, over rule it. For example; Watching a commercial to get a drink might make someone want to get a drink because it would benefit them and would work along side human nature. Watching a violent film and being influenced to go and act violently should go against human nature and therefore the audience would not be affected.
Examples of how the Hypodermic Syringe effect has effected the media are as follows:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066921/ A clockwork Orange, a film banned due to multiple rape scenes as censor groups were worried that audiences would try to re-enact them.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104870/ Mikey, Another film banned due to violence, however it was worried that if any children saw the film they would be influenced to kill.

Props.

We are looking for our props and we are using the website "google" to find images of optimum prop choices. Matty has been using window's movie maker to put together our animatic. Sam has been assisting with both of us, he took the photos for the animatic, and has helped me with the search.

the types of prop we would like to use are;

Summery of the past few lessons.

I realize I have fallen behind with my media posts, so here is a short summery of what has happened:
I presented my pitch with my group mates, Matty and Sam, to our class; however there were critisms over our casting, so we have had a group discussion and have decided to recast. I recently went and saw the schools production of "fame: the musical" and have spotted some possible candidates for characters, and once the performance was over I hunted them down and asked if they would like to be a part of our production. There was a mixture of maybes and yeses, however I think that some of these people would be better than our original cast as they would be more professional. During the lessons we have started looking at the significance of props and the meanings behind them and audience research. Due to the cast's age I am thinking that our target audience would be of a similar age however, due to the film genre a more adult audience might be more interested. I will have to research this further, possibly using viral advertising (using social networking sites) to get the general opinion of it. I should be shortly posting some images of possible props and what they signify.

Original Inspiration.

This is the original inspiration for my group wanting to use animation in our Film Noir intro. Using animation breaks the normal conventions of a film noir however I think this will work as it will be a modern-day twist on film noir and help it stand out from the other films.

Possibilities...

The Gentleman's Guide to Villainy from Aidan McAteer on Vimeo.
While on my many searches across the internet I came across this short animation. This animation is in a similar style on how I would like to make the animation to go at the end of my groups film noir.

Continuity task

Today I, along with bethany Bull, attempted to make our continuity task. We have made the film to all the criteria, but because we focused on this so much it is not very long or interesting, so therefore i attempted to make a second one. This one had the other effect. It is longer and more interesting than the first but is poorly constructed. I will attempt a third at a later date after viewing my classmates work and seeing how they have completed the task.

Work has started!

Tomorrow, my group; me, Matt Arms and Sam High, are going to the city to try to find a location where we could film our Film Noir. I will try to post tomorrow on the results.
UPDATE:
Me and Matty went to the city and have found a decent filming location. Paolo's restaurant  has the right sort of feel to it, however Sam has another location that we should check out.

This weeks homework...

This weeks homework entails reviewing a past blog that I like. I must comment on what I like about it and what I would use myself. I will update this post with the results.

UPDATE:
For my homework I have looked at Blaine Kenneally's A.S. Media blog. I have found that Blaine's blog starts with a simple yet effective picture which goes well with his dark background. This background works well with the text as Blaine has used brightly coloured text which stands out exceptionally well from the dark background making it easy to read. I do like how Blaine has used a large variety of different media in presenting his work on his blog. He has used Videos, Prezzis, and text. The text often uses hyper-links, which link either to past posts or his workmates blogs. I will most likely do this once I have started a major piece of filming work, for example, my opening tile sequence for a Film Noir. I would also like to replicate Blaine's idea for using multimedia for exhibiting my work.

Parts of a Film Noir.

A Prezi about the elements of film Noir, I apologise as it is slightly over due.

Wednesday 29 September 2010

I am legend; conventions of OTS.

During our last media lesson we watched the start of the opening title sequence for 'I am legend.' This OTS is both conventional and unconventional. I have summarised them in the following points;

Conventional:

  • Introduces characters and story.
  • Sets up an enigma.
  • Has an establishing shot.
  • A hook: who is the main character and how is he still alive?
Not Conventional:
  • No non-diagetic soundtrack; a lot of the time there is only silence or diagetic, yet quiet, sounds. This is different compared to the normal in this genre of film.
  • We watched up to 7:05 minutes and the was still no title.
  • No credits.
  • The above points show that there was nothing to interrupt the audiences anticipation, as if it was part of the main film.

The film starts with the soundtrack for a T.V. news broadcast. This soundtrack is broadcast over the top of the Advertising for the supporting companies. This is also unconventional however the T.V. program is made with realistic aesthetics. These aesthetics continue throughout the OTS, as if there is no OTS and we have gone straight into the film.

I worked out how to add my Prezi today. It can be found underneath my posts. Please watch, and enjoy :)

Media homework.

Today I started my first media homework. I'm actually enjoying making this Prezi, although I am a little lost on where to go next on it. So far I have documented the different types of media available and said about different types of internet media which I use.  I think my next two steps will be TV and Video games...

UPDATE:
I have finished the Prezi, and I am about to attempt to either link, or add it to my blog.

Media studies!

This is my first post :) I have media in about an hour and still haven't done all of the required tasks given in the little booklet :o I have created a blog (as you can see) and a Gmail account. I have currently joined the library but have not of yet logged out a book. I haven't watched any Dramas as I do not generally watch these sorts of programs as I prefer Sci-Fi or comedy programs. I have started the video about myself but as I am using Flash it will take me a while.
